Of her most recent release, a duo with Charnett Moffett, Downbeat Magazine wrote: “Like the much loved Fitzgerald and Pass recordings, or the classic Sarah Vaughan + 2…Passion of a Lonely Heart has a conversational feel that’s just right for a quiet Sunday afternoon!”
Jana will sing songs from her two albums, Soup’s on Fire and Passion of a Lonely Heart, as well as original songs inspired by her unusual life adventures which include off-the-beaten-path adventures in Japan, Bali, Outback Australia, Africa, Europe, and in and around the USA.
Many jazz aficionados only know Jana Herzen as the founder and president of the acclaimed Motéma label. Under her stewardship, Motéma has advocated for visionaries Randy Weston, Monty Alexander, Gregory Porter, Geri Allen, Rene Marie and dozens of other dynamic and virtuosic composer/performers. What many may not realize, however, is that Ms. Herzen, whose initial professional life was in the theater, is a seasoned performer and instrumentalist with quite a talent for writing and performing. Her new CD, Passion of a Lonely Heart, featuring renowned bassist Charnett Moffett has been gaining international raves:
“The spare setting is beautiful – and Jana sparkles here in ways that few other singers could hope to match.” JazzChill.com
Herzen’s extensive travels and life experiences give her much to write about, and her easy stage presence comes from years of performing in surprisingly varied circumstances. She’s played internationally as a solo artist and with Afro-pop and reggae bands; has performed in and directed off-Broadway musicals; and she’s as comfortable jamming around campfires with Aboriginal tribesmen as she is performing at major state functions. She once had the opportunity to perform for Nelson Mandela at the Paris Chamber of Commerce.
“Flickering tunes perfect for the quieter moments of the day.” — E music

And yes...Ravi Coltrane is John Coltrane's son, and Matthew Garrison is bassist Jimmy Garrison's son, who was John Coltrane's bassist!
FAMILY OF WOODSTOCK: A portion of the proceeds, along with all proceeds from a raffle, will benefit FAMILY of WOODSTOCK, an organization serving Ulster County and surrounding communities since 1970. For many years FAMILY has been an anchor for area residents, a place where people are respectful and caring, and where the search for solutions is creative and tireless. FAMILY's shelters, emergency food pantries, court advocates, counseling and case management services, hotlines, and childcare supports all work together to help people achieve the life changes they seek. www.familyofwoodstockinc.org
JACK DEJOHNETTE: In a career that spans five decades and includes collaborations with some of the most iconic figures in modern jazz, NEA and Grammy winner Jack DeJohnette has established an unchallenged reputation as one of the greatest drummers in the history of the genre. The list of creative associations throughout his career is lengthy and diverse: John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Keith Jarrett, Chet Baker, George Benson, Stanley Turrentine, Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Betty Carter and so many more. Along the way, he has developed a versatility that allows room for hard bop, R&B, world music, avant-garde, and just about every other style to emerge in the past half-century. Jack was honored as a recipient of a 2012 NEA Jazz Master Award for his lifetime achievement, and is recognized for his extraordinary contribution to advancing the jazz art form and serving as a mentor for a new generation of young aspiring jazz musicians. www.jackdejohnette.com
RAVI COLTRANE: Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, the son of John and Alice Coltrane, was born on Long Island in 1965, Although his father, John Coltrane, died when Ravi was only two, he had a strong musical upbringing by his mother, a renowned composer and pianist. He began playing fairly early, but did not commence a jazz vocation until he was in his early twenties. At that time, Ravi honed his chops playing with Elvin Jones' group before meeting Steve Coleman, Graham Haynes, and Wallace Roney. In the mid 1990s, Ravi began asserting himself as a leader, but also continued appearing as a sideman with the likes of McCoy Tyner, Jack DeJohnette, Jeff 'Tain' Watts, and as a co-leader of the Saxophone Summit with Joe Lovano and Dave Liebman. In 2000 he recorded his second album and covered Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman, and Wayne Shorter while adding a pair of his own tunes. By 2002 Ravi had firmly established himself as an ego-free and forward-thinking jazz musician with a strong musical identity influenced by, but set apart from, his famous father's legacy. Praised for his music’s “elusive beauty” and for his “style informed by tradition but not encumbered by it,” Ravi took a bold step in his creative journey with Spirit Fiction, his Blue Note Records debut in 2012 produced by Joe Lovano. www.ravicoltrane.com
MATTHEW GARRISON: Born in 1970, in New York, Matthew spent the first eight years of his life immersed in a community of musicians, dancers, visual artists, and poets. After the death of his father Jimmy Garrison (John Coltrane’s bassist) his family relocated to Rome, Italy, where he began to study piano and bass guitar. In 1988 Garrison returned to the U.S. where he graduated from Onteora High School (Boiceville) and in 1989 received a full scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music (Boston), where he began his professional career with the likes of Gary Burton, Bob Moses, Betty Carter, Mike Gibbs, and Lyle Mays to mention a few. Garrison moved to Brooklyn (NY) in 1994 and since then has performed, toured and recorded with artists such as Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, Chaka Khan, Pino Daniele, Michelle N’degnocello, Joni Mitchell, Whitney Houston, Wayne Shorter, Jack Dejohnette, Steve Coleman, Rita Marcotulli, Bill Cosby, Paul Simon, Cassandra Wilson, Wallace Roney, Geri Allen, Gary Thomas, John Mclaughlin, The Gil Evans Orchestra, Tito Punte, Mike Gibbs, John Scofield, The Saturday Night Live Band, Michael Brecker, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny and many others. In June 2012 Garrison founded ShapeShifter Lab, a now popular artist-run performance space in Brooklyn (NY). www.garrisonjazz.com http://www.shapeshifterlab.com/
